Critical Productions are proud to have worked with the VECTOR Project to conceptualise and develop ‘100 Perceptions: Raw Materials’

Every single one of us relies on raw materials. Through a live recorded experiment, 100 Perceptions: Raw Materials explores public perceptions of where we should source the minerals and metals that we need for the energy transition.

Making the film

Critical Productions worked in collaboration with the VECTOR Project and Big Circus Media to conceptualise, develop, film, produce and promote across social media channels 100 Perceptions: Raw Materials.

Our depth of knowledge bridging the minerals industry, sustainability and, film and media helped to tell the true story of this unique live social science study and 100 people’s perceptions of the minerals sector.

By scientific information accessible we empower viewers to make informed decisions through insightful narratives.

The Study

In 100 Perceptions: Raw Materials 100 volunteers from a cross-section of society were invited to the Natural History Museum, London to analyse and understand the general public’s knowledge of raw materials and their opinions of where they should come from – opening our ears and listening to the full diversity of perceptions presented and how these may have changed throughout the experiment.

Making scientific information accessible stimulates critical thinking so that people can form their own opinions. Once that is achieved, we can have open conversations about how we want to design our society, how we want to achieve our decarbonisation goals, and what is the role of raw materials.

Our 100 participants faced a big dilemma that applies to the entire world.

We asked the 100 volunteers to respond to a series of statements at the beginning and end of the evening, having participated in a series of educational activities in-between. The purpose of asking the same statements at the beginning and at the end of the study is so that we could measure were people’s perceptions becoming more informed. Some statements focused on knowledge and awareness, to see if this changed over the course of the evening as we presented lots of information. Other statements assessed if this helped the participants to form an opinion - which could become more positive or more negative.
